I just reviewed the photo album with pictures I took during the mid- and late sixties (vantage points: windmill, HBS building under construction and the corner of ‘Juliana and van Echtenstraat’). It brings back memories – and may be some points of interest to site visitors. The Schultink family has rather deep roots in the ‘Hoogeveen community’. Grandfather Jan Schultink had a construction company and was the principal contractor building the ‘Hoofdstraatkerk’. He also rebuild the church in Dwingeloo in the early 1920s, with his oldest son serving as the supervisor (living on site in a ‘woonwagen’ with his new bride, until its completion). The church tower in the form of an onion (‘siepel in Drents’) was built at my grandfather’s workshop on the ‘Schutstraat’ and moved by a horse drawn carriage to Dwingeloo and hoisted in place. My grandfather served also in the ‘Gedeputeerde Staten’, and was a board member of the Dutch Reformed church on the ‘van Echtenstraat’ and the Technical School. In the latter, my father followed in his footsteps. My mother served many years as the President of the ‘Gezinszorg’ with annual membership meetings in ‘Royal’ followed by a fund raising lottery and a theater play for its members. The bakery, where I was born, was built in the early 1930. It was closed at the time of the picture, with my parent moving to Dwingeloo, where my grandfather had rebuild the church in the 1920s. In the late 60s, I had started my years in the Dutch military, before my finishing my studies at Wageningen University and later my Doctorate at Michigan State University, where I served for 35 years at a Professor of International Resource Development and AgBio Research (1980-2015). Over the years, it has been a pleasure to revisit Hoogeveen (including the Rotary Club and chartering a Cessna at Hoogeveen airport, taking pictures over Dwingeloo while flying it over northern Holland) and introducing my childhood ‘footsteps’ to my American wife and my 2 sons, now with their own companies – one IT company near Seattle and a Genetic Engineering firm in Berkeley, California. They are reintroducing the Dutch customs of ‘Sinterklaas’ to our grandkids, who faithfully set out wooden shoes with carrots under the fireplace being rewarded in the form of ‘pepernoten’, ‘speculaas’ and ‘chocolade letters’. 😊 (met dank aan dhr.
